North Carolina Cattle Producers Approve Continuing State Assessment

November 20, 2024

Fuquay-Varina, NC

North Carolina cattle producers voted to continue the North Carolina Cattle Industry Assessment in a statewide referendum held in October. The assessment is $1 per head on cattle marketed in North Carolina.

The North Carolina State Board of Agriculture called for the referendum at the request of the NCCA. State law requires the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service to carry out a referendum at the direction of the board.

The entire $1 state check off will be used for programs in North Carolina, whereas the $1 national check off is divided between the state and the National Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board.

North Carolina’s original assessment program was established in 1957. The assessment allows producers to continue providing funds controlled by North Carolina beef and dairy producers to promote our product, our youth, our industry, and to provide research and advocacy to protect their way of life.

Since 2010’s reinstatement of the assessment, our industry has been better positioned to serve its producers and ultimately, consumers. Producers have gained knowledge in best management practices that research has developed. Workshops and field days for producers delivers that knowledge and demonstrates its effectiveness with hands on applications. Consumers have gained access to a better understanding of our production practices and appreciation of what our producers do on the farm.

Programs for both farm and non-farm background youth have been a huge beneficiary of the investments from the assessment as we have been able to support livestock schools, judging contests, skillathon contests, leadership development, and the very popular youth beef industry tour, among many others.

Milo Lewis, executive director of the North Carolina Cattlemen’s Association, states that, “The assessment will be for a period of six years with a recurring referendum if requested.” Also, Mrs. Lewis states that producers will be eligible for a full refund of their North Carolina assessment by request within 60 days of the sale of the animal with proof of sale. This is a provision that is not available in the national program due to federal law.
